Isaac Birituro & The Rail Abandon

“The world-renowned lineage of Kakraba Lobi’s virtuosity lives on in Isaac Birituro as his deft vibes of dancing melodies cross the xylophone and shake the palm wine for this highlife soul collaboration with The Rail Abandon. Get a sweat on!” – Pete On The Corner

We are thrilled to be linking up again with Wah Wah 45s, the London based record label who paid a visit to Cloudspotting in 2016 with a memorable four-act showcase. Crossing cultural borders is always an aim of our live music programme and it is with delight we welcome Wah Wah 45s’ latest signing, a collaboration between Ghanaian xylophone master and Grammy award winning Leeds-based producer and singer-songwriter Sonny Johns (aka The Rail Abandon). The lead single taken from this project is the uplifting Yesu Yan Yan, which was actually the very first song Isaac played to his new musical partner. A perfect marriage of brass, reed and wind instruments, backed by abundant percussion, a resonant bass-line and The Kalba Biri-fore Choir, it is also the opening track of the album and fittingly so, as it translates to “welcome!”

Sonny Johns travelled to Kalba, North Ghana, and built a mobile recording studio where he worked with Isaac and other local musicians in a church (the only place with reliable electricity). The album, named: ‘Kalba’ was created in three days of intensive rehearsing and performing and the proceeds from it will go towards funding future music projects that will impact on peoples’ lives in the most positive and long-term way known – through education. Isaac is in the UK for a short run of Spring and Summer club and festival shows and we are thrilled this opportunity coincided with our festival.
